American Cancer Society Suspends Relay for Life Of the Cove on June 27

Due to the impact of COVID-19, local community volunteers, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society have chosen to suspend this year’s Relay For Life of the Cove event that was scheduled to take place at the Roaring Spring Athletic Field on June 27, 2020.

“This was an especially difficult decision to make, but one we thought was necessary for the health and safety of our participants and survivors, said Jen Barron, senior Community Development manager with the American Red Cross in Hollidaysburg. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who has worked so very hard in supporting our mission in the community through their support of this event.

Barron said a survivor and team dinner celebration will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12. Additional information will be released once finalized.

Cancer survivors are encouraged to call (800) 227-2345 to register for the fall survivor celebration.

Barron said COVID-19 has had a particularly hard impact on the American Cancer Society. The virus hit right at the start of the spring fundraising season, she said, resulting in the cancellation of all in-person spring and summer events. Barron said whenever possible the American Cancer Society has rescheduled events or moved them to a virtual platform.

“This has resulted in a huge budget shortfall that we are now working hard to overcome through a variety of avenues,” Barron said. “Cancer hasn’t stopped, and neither can we. Your continued support is needed now more than ever.”
