Claysburg-Kimmel School Board Approves $13 Million Budget for 2020-21

Claysburg-Kimmel school directors gave final approval to the 2020-21 budget during their June 10 meeting.

Expenditures for the next fiscal year in the budget will be $13,402,378 million and the revenue is $12,516,011 million, a deficit of $ 886,367.

“We’ll continue to look for ways to reduce the deficit,” Michelle Smithmyer, business manager said.

Final millage rates for 2020-21 are 7.98 mills in Greenfield Township, an increase of .02 from 20-19-2020, and 9.96 mills in Kimmel Township, a decrease of .96.

“We are not raising taxes in 2020-21,” Smithmyer said. “The board felt strongly that this is definitely not the time to raise taxes.”

The board also adopted the following taxes: wage tax, 1 percent; $5 per capita; $10 per capita in Greenfield Township (with one-half going to the township) and $10 per capita in Kimmel; real estate transfer tax of 1 percent; and the Pennsylvania Emergency & Municipal Services Tax (CKSD’s share), $10 in Kimmel and $5 in Greenfield.

Also approved was the 2020 Homestead and Farmstead Exclusion Resolution. The final maximum real estate tax reduction amount applicable to each approved homestead and to each approved farmstead will be $237.04.

Resignations

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Shelly Beers from her position as a secondary biology teacher. The board also accepted Beers’ resignation from her positions as a Scholastic Scrimmage advisor and Middle Level Future Business Leaders of America advisor.

Michaela Gresko of Loretto, a 2020 graduate of Mount Aloysius College, Cresson, was approved as a temporary professional at a starting salary of $42,500. She will teach biology at the secondary level.

The board accepted the retirements of Wendy Ruggles, cafeteria worker, and Cindy Ritchey, custodian.

The board approved the transfer of Reva Smith from her position as elementary secretary to the elementary principal’s secretary.

Lori Ickes was named to the elementary’s secretary position.

Jaclyn Brides (speech) was approved for the Extended School Year staff at 54 hours.
