Rotary Names Northern Bedford 'Students of the Month'

The Morrisons Cove Rotary Club recently named its "Rotary Student of the Month" recipients at Northern Bedford High School, Loysburg.

All recipients graduated in May.

Joshua Strayer

Joshua Strayer was named February's "Student of the Month." He is the son of Richard and Stefanie Strayer of Roaring Spring.

Joshua's school honors and accomplishments included High Honor Roll, the Challenge Program Community Service Award, Early College program, National Honor Society, State Future Business Leaders of America Internship, FBLA state qualifier for Emerging Business Issues, cross-country two-time state qualifier and track state qualifier in 4-x-800 relay.

His school activities included Student Council treasurer, Chorus President, Marching and Concert Band, Pep Band, portraying Schroeder in the school's musical "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" and FBLA.

His community activities include assistant Little League coach, Cove Community Theater, Woodbury Food Bank, and previously volunteered at the Replogle fire hall.

Joshua plans to attend Shippensburg University in the fall.

Alaina Stuckey

Alaina Stuckey was named March's "Student of the Month." She is the daughter of Jared and Deidra Mellott of Roaring Spring.

Her school honors and accomplishments included High Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Early College Program, 2016 Presidential Award winner, 2019 second place State FFA Milk Quality and Products, 2019 The Big E Milk Quality and Products contestant and 2018 FFA state speech contestant. 

Her school activities include PBIS Student PRIDE Team, vice-president; FFA, treasurer; Interact Club; and softball.

Her community activities include Red Cross blood donor, Martinsburg Grace Brethren Christmas musical, and is employed at Subway.

Alaina plans to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania and major in nursing.

Nickalas Garner

Nickalas Garner was named April's "Student of the Month." He is the son of Richard and Holly Ward of Hopewell.

His school activities, honors and accomplishments included High Honors, Presidential Education Award, Early College Program; Future Business Leaders of America Chapter reporter and regional and state competition; placed first at FBLA Regionals as a sophomore for Introduction to Business; placed second at FBLA Regionals in Business Math and eighth in the state for Current Events as a junior; placed second in Help Desk at FBLA Regionals as a senior; and Panther TV writer and broadcaster.

His community activities include completing his senior project as a summer volunteer at the Everett Free Library.

Nickalas has enlisted in the Navy for Nuclear Engineering and was scheduled to leave for basic training in July.

Rebekah Helsel

Rebekah Helsel was named May's "Student of the Month." She is the daughter of Eric and Jessica Helsel of New Enterprise.

Rebekah's school honors and accomplishments included High Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Early College Program and the Presidential Academic Award.

Her school activities included Student Council, National Honor Society, Interact Club, SADD

Her community activities include childcare at church, camp counselor, VBS volunteer, food bank volunteer and coach/referee for AYSO.

Rebekah plans to receive an Associate degree in Hospitality Management at Allegany College of Maryland and work in restaurant management.

Award

The "Rotary Student of the Month" award is one of Morrisons Cove Rotary Club's community programs. The club also sponsors "Students of the Month" at Central and Williamsburg high schools. To be eligible, students need to achieve a grade point average of 93 percent or above for their first three years of high school.
