Changes in Store for Dairy, 4-H Shows
July 23, 2020
Due to COVID-19 regulations and health concerns for spectators and exhibitors, the regular week-long Morrisons Cove Dairy Show including dairy shows, contests, exhibits (home and dairy, vegetables, needlework, etc.), pie and ice cream festival, etc., will not be held this year.
An abbreviated Blair/Bedford Youth and Open Dairy Show will be held Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 3 and 4, at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park in Martinsburg.
The schedule will be as follows:
• Monday, Aug. 3 – animals arrive
• Monday, Aug. 3, 7 p.m. – Blair and Bedford Youth Showmanship Contest
• Tuesday, Aug. 4, 8:30 a.m. – Blair and Bedford Youth and Open (combined) Dairy Show
Animals will be dismissed following exhibition on Tuesday. Supreme champions will be selected at the conclusion of the show.
Due to restrictions, the committee discourages spectators this year except for exhibitors and their families. No bleachers for seating, etc., will be provided. Anyone attending the show (including spectators and families) must sign a waiver form at the show.
Thomas Ritchey, show secretary, said the Dairy Show Committee hopes to hold its normal event in 2021, celebrating the 70th anniversary of the dairy show.
The annual Blair County 4-H Junior Livestock Sale will not be held this year due to regulations and concern for spectator and exhibitor health.
There will be an opportunity for youth to exhibit their animals on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 17 and 18, at the show barns at Memorial Park.
The livestock committee is also discouraging spectators this year except for exhibitors and their families. No bleachers for seating, etc. will be provided. Anyone attending the show (including spectators and families) must sign a waiver form at the show.
Ritchey said both committees feel bad about limiting spectators; however, to meet the regulations and provide an opportunity for the youth to show, this measure is necessary for the current year.
The committees thank the community for their past and future support of our youth.
