The Martinsburg Community Guidance Council set a goal of $27,500 for the fall’s Community Fund. The goal was an increase of $100 over last year’s goal – less than one percent. The campaign would benefit 12 charitable agencies.

Dr. David B. Smith, former high school principal, was named acting superintendent of the Northern Bedford County School District, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. Lanny F. Ross. Robert K. Sell, formerly assistant high school principal, had been named acting high school principal.

Claysburg’s Brian Weyandt set the all-time career win mark at Bedford Speedway, capturing his 32nd career victory. Weyandt won the semi-late feature despite starting in last place. The victory was Weyandt’s fifth of the season.

Sarah Conrad, a junior at Central High School, earned a role in the Old Bedford Village production of “The Hound of the Baskervilles.” Miss Conrad would play Kathy Stapleton, a young woman who lives on the moor and falls in love with Sir Henry.
