Fire Destroys Smith Barn

A fast-moving fire destroyed a large barn and about 20 dairy cows on the Gary Smith farm along Burketown Road in Taylor Township on Aug. 31. Firefighters from seven companies battled the blaze. State police fire marshal Gary Trivelpiece investigated to determine a cause for the fire.
Work on a project to replace sewer lines in Martinsburg was expected to get under way. Lines were scheduled to be replaced in the following three areas: an area south of the farm road beside Gene Henry's ponds; the alley between South Market and Locust streets; and an area along Spring Street near the Sheldon Smith residence.
Williamsburg Borough Council voted to borrow $50,000 from the Hollidaysburg Trust Co. to pay operating expenses and current bills and debts of the water system while anticipating a $258,000 low-interest loan from the state to carry out a water system improvement project.
Travis Brown scored both of Northern Bedford's touchdowns and ran for 142 yards on 16 carries, but Everett prevailed, 26-16.
