National Newspaper Week is being observed this week. The theme is “American Newspapers – 200 Years of Freedom – 1770s to 1970s.”

“We must never forget Freedom of the press is essential of the freedom of our country,” said Donald S. Taylor, president of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers’ Association.

Taylor, who is president of the Bethlehem Globe-Times, predicted the progress of our country over the past 200 years would continue “as long as the press keeps its freedom and lives up to its great responsibility.”

Gov. Raymond P. Shafer issued a proclamation in which he declared, “No freedom has been more significant to our democracy, our nation’s growth and progress, and to our individual citizens than freedom of the press.” The governor quoted Thomas Jefferson, who wrote in 1787, “The basis of our government being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
