The Claysburg-Kimmel School District learned Friday morning, Oct. 23, that an adult associated with its elementary school tested positive for COVID-19.
Upon learning this information, school officials “acted swiftly and according to the district’s approved Health and Safety Plan,” Darren J. McLaurin, district superintendent, said. The adult was last in the building Monday Oct. 19.
McLaurin said the school district immediately contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and will continue to follow its guidance.
“Those individuals who we know may have had close contact with this person have already been notified. No students were identified as close contacts,” McLaurin said.
At the present time, McLaurin said, the district does not have any confirmed student cases in either of the elementary and high school buildings. He also said that no adults at the junior/senior high have tested positive.
“However, due to DOH guidelines and staffing issues at our elementary school, we will need to temporarily shift to remote/virtual learning for the week of Oct. 26,” McLaurin said.
Elementary students do not report to school. Teachers will be in school and available via phone or email to assist students, McLaurin said. Students were given instructions from their teacher before leaving school Oct. 23.
“We plan to return to full face-to-face instruction on Monday, Nov. 2,” McLaurin said.
The junior/senior high school will remain face to face,” the superintendent said.
“As cases increase this fall, we recognize that this may not be the last time a person associated with the Claysburg-Kimmel School District tests positive for COVID-19,” McLaurin said. “In each case, we will notify those in contact with the individual and the community at large in accordance with the recommendation of the Department of Health and with respect to each individual’s privacy.
“We understand this is a major inconvenience for families and hope that this is simply a temporary situation. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
