The first time that I came to the United States in 1945, I was surprised at the variety of holidays observed here.
I was intrigued to learn about Halloween - the COSTUME party at school, beggars’ night, carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns, etc. Our teacher made a point to explain all about it when she realized that I had never heard of it. Among other things she said, she mentioned that Halloween came before All Saints’ Day. That gave me a link with one of our holidays in Puerto Rico.
All Saints’ Day is celebrated there by the Roman Catholic Church on Nov. 1. Then the next day all the people...
