Zook Commander of GAR

Charles W. Zook was elected commander of Lt. Lower Post, GAR, of Roaring Spring. Charley was a Pennsylvania Reserve soldier at the battle of Fredericksburg, where “Johnny” shot off his right leg.

Williams Van Allman, Samuel Biddle and William Shafer were on a hunting expedition to near Henrietta.

The Literary Society at the Smithfield School, Huston Township, reorganized and was meeting each Friday. Jerry Peck was the leading debater. Members also were issuing a paper known as the Piney Creek Gazette with Simon A. Smith as editor in chief.
