Camerer, 100, Passes On

Herald of Dec. 24, 1920

Mrs. Elizabeth Camerer, who on May 21 before, had reached the age of 100 years, died at her home at the Camerer farm just outside Martinsburg borough, on Sunday. Death was due to pneumonia.

The woman who was said to have been the oldest person in Blair county, was born in Franklin county, her maiden name being Horn. She came to the Cove with her parents when a girl, and became the wife of James Camerer who was the son of Daniel Camerer, one of the two original settlers of the central section of the Cove.

Six children were living, Mrs. Sarah Stayer of Woodbury, Mrs. Susan Wineland, Mrs. Elizabeth Kochendarfer and James Camerer of Martinsburg, and Samuel and Joseph of the West.

One of the most remarkable things about the aged woman was that she was nearly 90 years old before she could read. She had sustained a fracture of a hip about twelve years prior to her death, and it was while she was confined to her home that she started her education. She was laid to rest in Spring Hope cemetery.
