A Fact-Based Response to the Attack On Me

Letter to the Editor / Opinion

To the Editor:

This is a response to the letter by Wayne Bush published in the Dec. 3 edition of the Morrisons Cove Herald (Page A-5).

There comes a time when thinking people need to face the truth and admit defeat for the future of the democracy we all want to see continue to exist. It’s not the name-calling that bothers me because at my age I’ve been called worse than “comrade.” It’s the complete disregard of reality and facts that are proven day after day and that explains the blind devotion to a man who has been the most dishonest politician in the history of the country. They say that if you tell lies over and over again, eventually even the most egregious lies will be believed by a segment of the population.

On the day I’m writing, this, 2,913 Americans died of COVID-19. President Trump didn’t start the pandemic but his lying about it and the lack of an effective and coherent response has made us the saddest victims of the past century. Let that number sink in, 2,913.

Lives lost do matter! Let’s compare:

D-Day (2,501)

Pearl Harbor (2,403)

9/11 (2,977)

Gettysburg (7,000 in three days)

The Revolutionary War (6,800 over eight years).

Our losses are obscene!

We liberals sucked it up for four years. Now it’s the turn of the Trump supporters to accept the will of the people and at least pretend that they believe in democracy. Yes, living in the world’s fifth-largest economy is sometimes different and challenging, but sticking your head in the sand and ignoring the biggest threat to the security of the United States for more than a century is a pitiful political and moral position. I also missed my family on Thanksgiving and will miss them at Christmas. Most of the current spread of the virus is traced to small groups and family members. Gambling with other peoples’ lives for a day of social gathering is the epitome of narcissistic behavior. Celebrate Next Year!

Finally, I never mentioned Nazis. Must be a self realization. If the shoe fits.

Happy and Safe Holidays and a Happier New Year.

Editor’s Note: Glen Dick’s original opinion was published in the Herald on Nov. 19. Herald columnist Wayne Bush replied and that letter was published in the Dec. 3 edition of the Herald.

With this letter, we’re calling an end to this exchange, with both parties having had their say. Mr. Dick spoke, Mr. Bush replied and Mr. Dick rebutted. We think that’s enough of this particular exchange.

Both authors are welcome to submit letters to the editor on local topics, but this chain is closed.
