Herald of Feb. 15, 1996

Milton V. Burgess, 96, of Martinsburg, former editor of the Morrisons Cove Herald, passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 14, 1996, at the Homewood Retirement Center, where he had been a resident for several weeks. Mr. Burgess retired in 1982 after serving for 24 years as editor of the Herald, but he continued to write his “Local History” column in the Herald until last May. In addition to writing for this and other newspapers for 73 years, he was the author of several books, and his historical articles were quoted widely in other publications. Before coming to the Herald in 1958, he worked at newspapers in Pittsburgh, beginning in 1922 as a reporter for the Gazette-Times and later serving as political editor for the Sun-Telegraph.

A souvenir booklet on the Flood of ’96 was being published by the Herald. The expected release date was Feb. 22.

The Cove Shoe Co. in Martinsburg was honored for excellence in hiring persons with disabilities. Cove Shoe was selected for this year’s award from more than 100 employers in Blair County.
