The Mysterious Faces of the Blair County Courthouse

Many of the faces are located on either side of the courthouse's narrow windows, at the bottom of the legs of the arches over the windows, as indicated by the red dots.

During the recent renovations on the courthouse, it was discovered that there were carved stone faces adorning different areas of the exterior of the building. It turns out that there are 55 to 58 heads.

Former Blair County Commissioner Terry Tomassetti contacted the Blair County Genealogical Society and asked for their help in identifying the faces.

The courthouse was dedicated in the summer of 1877. In the July 11, 1877, edition of the Hollidaysburg Democrat Standard, all four pages were dedicated to the opening of the new courthouse. In the newspaper, one tiny paragraph that stated so...
