Members of a local wrestling club performed well, winning and placing at a state-level tournament.
Chelsie Hollern, club coordinator, told the Herald that My House Wrestling sponsored a statewide tournament to make up for the regular meets and tournaments canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The tournament was held April 1-3 in Monroeville.
"It was a big event," Hollern said. "It was basically combining what normally would have been states and regionals, so it was huge. A lot of wrestlers."
The Cove-area wrestlers are members of the Pa. Assassins Wrestling Club, which is based in Altoona but has several wrestlers from the Cove.
Hollern said that the club has about 30 members and practices three times a week, with each practice lasting about three hours.
Ages are mostly elementary school athletes, but there a few junior high students, Hollern said.
"The junior high students have been with us for years," she said.
The Assassins are a traveling club with "a lot of committed parents," Hollern said, which makes transporting the wrestlers easier.
"Parents take kids over [to matches and tournaments] and stay with them," she said. "They're very dedicated. Some parents will take multiple kids if someone can't get away."
Parents pay for tournaments and travel out of pocket, Hollern said, but "if kid can't pay, everyone chips in to make it happen. Anyone who is willing to do the work will get a chance."
The club has a booster club that helps pay some expenses.
"This year really got it going," Hollern said.
She said that the booster club is trying for non-profit status.
Hollern said she's been with the club since it started, "long enough to remebmer everyone's shoe size," she said.
The club was started by Nick Castellucci about five years ago as "Quick Five," a reference to the fact that five quick moves will win a match," she said.
Hollern works at an excavating company and is trying to help launch Blair Hydrographics, which sponsored the advertisement congratulating the winning wrestlers in the April 8 edition of the Herald.
Hollern said that her son is involved in the club, but did not make it to states,
For a list of the wrestlers who participated, placed and won at the tournament, see Page A-7 of the April 8, 2021, edition of the Herald.
