Residents Warned of Scam

Herald of May 14, 1896

Residents were cautioned to be on the lookout for a couple who had been swindling residents of area towns. A women book agent was reported to be going from house to house leaving books for examination. The next day a man would call at the same homes to see if the books were wanted and if not take them with him. A few days later the woman agent would reappear and, being told the man had taken away her books, would weep copiously, plead poverty and accept any compensation offered by the beliver.

The family of David Straesser of Martinsburg held a cat with four kittens - two entirely black and two entirely white.

George S. Potter advertised a public sale of 20 head of cattle at the Henry Liebegott stock yards.

Old relics were to be sold at auction at the Huston Township home of the late John Daily, near Beavertown, by his widow Hester. Among them were spinning wheels and reels, old flax, and a wooden moulboard plough 162 years old.
