Cove and County Voters Choose the Familiar in 2021 Primary

Blair County voters had only one contested county race to decide, and overwhelmingly gave the nod to Republican Robin Patton over primary opponent Bill Straesser in the race for Prothonotary. Unofficial tallies show Patton receiving 9,373 votes to Straesser’s 5,584.

District Attorney Pete Weeks, running unopposed, received 14,637 votes while Sheriff Jim Ott, the only name on the ballot for the office, garnered 15,365.

Municipal races saw familiar names continue to have voter support as Martinsburg Mayor Richard Brantner Sr., while running unopposed, received 315 of the 316 votes cast by Republican voters.

In the race for borough council, Republicans James C. Dell, Edward Bennett, Janet Blattenberger and Charles Kensinger will appear on the fall ballot where they will face a challenge from Democrat Neil Gartland for one of four seats. Gartland bested Ken Johnson with an unofficial tally of 33 votes to 28. On the Republican ticket for a two-year term on council, Durbin D. Metzler bested Janet Blattenberger 171 votes to 135 while splitting the write-in vote at one each on the Democrat side.

North Woodbury Township voters elected to return Republican James H. Garman Jr. to the supervisor’s seat he was appointed to in February. Garman beat Tom Snowberger by an unofficial count of 259 votes to 194.

In the race for Mayor of Roaring Spring, Republican Dennis Igou will square off against Democrat Derek J. Brown in this fall’s general election. Both ran unopposed for their party’s nomination.

In the race for council, four seats are up for grabs and the two incumbents on the ballot, Republicans Kevin Snowberger and Kayla Reed, gathered 284 and 245 votes, respectively. Craig Curfman and Erin Wyandt received the top two write-in votes for the two remaining slots.

In Williamsburg, Republican Mayor Ted Hyle ran unopposed, gathering 143 of the 145 votes cast. The four council seats were secured by Republicans Bruce Hamilton, Dennis J. Hammel, Edgar C. Patterson and Paula Hamilton.

In Greenfield Township, Republican Alex Musselman overwhelmingly defeated opponents Marlyn Graffius and Carrie Graffius for the one open seat on the board of supervisors. Musselman’s unofficial vote total of 325 far outpaced the 29 garnered by Marlyn Graffius and Carrie Graffuis’s 23 votes.

Freedom Township’s Republican voters gave the nod for a six-year term on the board of supervisors to incumbent Ed Bender. Unofficial results show Bender receiving 329 votes to challenger Jeremy Flaugh’s 205.

Timothy James, appointed to the board in January after the passing of Supervisor Daniel “Butch” Giarth, received 485 votes to serve out the remaining two years of Giarth’s term.

Republican Nathan Caldwell, running unopposed on the ticket for Auditor, received 484 of the 485 votes cast while Republican James Lang received 494 of the 500 votes cast for Tax Collector.

All vote totals are unofficial until the election is certified.
