For the first time in the history of Northern Bedford High School, the invocation and benediction were not read during commencement exercises June 6 in the high school auditorium.

Due to a complaint from a parent with a son in the school district to the American Civil Liberties Union, the school was forced to change the tradition of the high school.

Rebecca A. Carson, daughter of Rodney and Cathy Carson of Martinsburg, was named the 1996-97 Bedford County Dairy Princess June 8 in the Northern Bedford High School auditorium.
