Lead researcher Erica Smyers stayed at the home of Tracy and Chris Kolb to study lanternflies in their backyard. Smyers was able to create a model for predicting percentage of hatch and a spotted lanternfly egg hatch predication interactive map.
Research conducted by scientists in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences has led to the creation of an online tool that can help predict seasonal egg hatch for spotted lanternflies.
The spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect from Asia, was discovered in North America in Berks County in 2014. The pest since has spread to at least 34 Pennsylvania counties. It also has become established in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.
