SCSD Outlines 2021-22 School Year COVID-19 Restrictions

The regular Board of Directors meeting for the Spring Cove School District was held Monday, July 19, at the administration office board room. This was the first live, in-person board meeting held in 16 months, bringing an end to all online Zoom meetings.

The district’s Health and Safety Plan for the 2021-22 school year was the primary focus of the meeting. Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker said that masking in the school will not be required at the start of the 2021-22 school year, but students may wear them optionally.

As a rule of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), however, masking will be required of every student riding a bus or school van for any reason. All transportation will require masking. Baker emphasized this rule did not come from the district but is required of anyone on a bus, train, plane or any means of transportation.

The school is not requiring anyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

There will be no masking in sporting events, but during transport to games, masks will be required. There will be no restrictions on distance put on spectators attending athletic or school events. The school district staff will review the proper wearing of masks.

There also will be no virtual classes offered, all classes will be live, in-person learning or parents may choose to utilize cyber school. These are the only two options offered.

Physical distancing for students will be from 3 to 6 feet. Dr. Baker said that lunch periods will start at 6 feet of separation for students and if all goes well, they hope to move students closer as time goes on. However, Dr. Baker also said that more restrictions could possibly have to be put in place if the county moves to a higher level of COVID-19 transmission. The Health and Safety Plan presented was unanimously approved by the board.

July saw two new principals take the helm at Spring Cove School District. Spring Cove Middle School Assistant Principal Jeff Guyer and Central High School Assistant Principal Cheyenne Dickson both began their duties on July 1.

Marissa Cerully assumed her new position as Martinsburg Elementary School principal on July 1.

A motion to employ Briana Cunningham as varsity assistant girls volleyball coach for the 2021 fall season with a salary of $2,334 was approved by the board as well as a list of all the coaches for the 2021 fall season.

There was also a motion to approve the athletic ticket prices for the 2021-22 school year reflecting no increase in price from the prior year, which was approved unanimously.

A motion to appoint attorneys Terry Despoy and Phillip Robertson to serve as hearing officers for student expulsions for the 2021-22 school year with an hourly rate of $175 was approved unanimously by the board.

There will be a combined committee of the whole and regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 9, and a regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 16.

All meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the administration office board room.
