Man Arrested for DUI Following Fatal Accident

A Baltimore, Md., man has been arrested following a fatal accident on Friday, Aug. 6, on Route 36 in Bedford County.

Anthony M. Satterfield, 22, of Baltimore, Md., was arrested by Pa. State Police, Bedford, on Aug. 8, 2021, following an interview.

State police have charged Satterfield with homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, DUI, driving without a license and summary charges.

Police said that Satterfield went to the PSP Bedford station for an interview and “admitted to smoking marijuana and driving the vehicle.”

Satterfield was arraigned before Magisterial District Justice Judge H. Cyril Bingham, Bedford, and Satterfield’s bail was set at $200,000.

According to the Pa. State Police, a trooper was dispatched around 3:53 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, to a two-vehicle crash at 5164 Woodbury Pike, Woodbury Township, Bedford County. A police investigation of the accident on State Route 36 indicated that Satterfield was operating a Virginia-registered 2005 Nissan Sentra at a “high rate of speed” north on SR 36 and passing multiple vehicles. Police said that Satterfield passed at least five vehicles.

According to police, a Chevrolet Silverado being driven south by Joel Robinson, with a passenger, swerved to the west roadside to avoid a collision with Satterfield’s vehicle. Satterfield also swerved to the west roadside, resulting in a head-on collision between the two vehicles.

Police said that Raymond Ramirez, of Brooklyn, Md., was ejected from the Sentra vehicle and died from his injuries. Katlyn Sandoval, of Indiana, Pa., and Tyshiem Shell, of Baltimore, Pa., were in the Sentra and were transported to UPMC Altoona for medical treatment. Police said that the investigation indicated that Ramirez was seated in the front passenger seat of the Sentra at the time of the crash.

The other persons in the vehicle operated by Satterfield were identified by police as Satterfield’s brother, a friend and a female.

Police said that Satterfield was transported by ambulance, but refused medical treatment and then fled from the hospital.

On Aug. 8, Sunday, Satterfield presented himself at the Pa. State Police station in Bedford for an interview. Police said that he was interviewed and admitted to smoking marijuana and driving the vehicle.

Police stated that a small baggie and a plastic container both containing suspected marijuana were found in the Sentra.

According to the police report, Satterfield told police in the interview that he was attempting to get enough hours driving to get his driving permit, a requirement in Maryland. Satterfield told police that he was “probably going five more than the speed limit” at the time of the crash but could not tell police the speed limit of the road.

Satterfield told police that he smoked marijuana in the vehicle along with the passengers approximately 40 minutes prior to driving.

The police investigation of the incident is continuing.
