Daring Forgery Attempted

Herald of Aug. 20, 1896

Harry Estep of Clover Creek presented a check for $738 at the Martinsburg Deposit Bank payable to Philip Shelly and received the money and disappeared shortly after. Both signatures were subsequently learned to be forgeries. J.D. Allender of Williamsburg, with assistance, captured Estep and put him in the Hollidaysburg jail. After searching in the house, the money was found in Estep’s father-in-law’s coat. All was recovered except eight dollars.

Fresh Air children of New York were cared for by several Roaring Spring citizens during this week.
