This book begins in May 1941 in Philadelphia. Lilliana Swope is devastated when her mother passes away. Her mother made her promise to take a ring to her Aunt Hyacinth in No Creek, NC. After the funeral, Lilliana lays down on a pew in the church. She overhears her father and husband conspire to have her put in an institution as mentally unstable. Her husband wants a divorce that the church would accept so he plans to accuse her of adultery. Lilliana is hurt and shocked. Her husband and father are both physically abusive to her and her mother.
