Freedom Twp. Volunteer Fire Co. to Host Christmas Party After Year Off

The Freedom Township Volunteer Fire Company will be holding a Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the firehall.

This year’s party is in memory of Daniel “Butch” Giarth.

Giarth, a long-time member of the fire company as well as a Freedom Township Supervisor, passed away on Dec. 30, 2020.

According to Freedom Township Volunteer Fire Company Chief Ron Henry, Giarth was the driving force behind the Christmas parties and continuing them is a way to honor his memory.

“Butch had a big heart and he loved kids,” Henry said. “He loved putting together the Christmas party and took so much joy in seeing the kids and families come in and have a good time.”

Giarth had been a member of the fire company since 1976, serving as a lieutenant, captain, and trustee.

While Giarth served in many capacities, his humanitarian efforts, and his tireless work to help people are what defined him.

Giarth spearheaded the effort to construct the firefighter’s memorial that stands across from the firehall.

“Butch took serving his community very seriously and was always looking for ways to do it,” Henry said. “The Christmas party is something he really looked forward to every year.”

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancelation of last year’s party and Henry said everyone is excited to be able to bring it back.

“This is one of those events that just make you feel good, and we missed that last year,” Henry said.

The Freedom Township Christmas party is open to all residence of Freedom Township.
