Mother and Baby Found Dead

Herald of Dec. 17, 1896

Mrs. Albert Martin, aged 43, and her 2-week-old baby were reported missing. Miss Zelia Treese, one of the searchers looking for the mother and baby, found a pair of women’s slippers and a baby’s nursing bottle lying along the bank of Piney Creek near the Martin home. The bodies of the two were found in the creek. A jury was formed to hold an inquest into the cause of death for both.

The will of the late Mrs. Jane Madara of Bloomfield Township, near Ore Hill, filed at the registrar’s office in Bedford, occasioned considerable comment because she cut off most of her children leaving them $1 each, according to an account in the Herald. Most of her property went to a son, Joseph P. Madara.

The general merchandise store of Lynn A. Brua in Hollidaysburg was entered by burglars the previous week and more than $100 in merchandise was carried off.
