'Homegrown Treasure' Turns 102

Dorothy Koontz of Williamsburg celebrated her 102 birthday on Feb. 2.

Miss Koontz was born and raised in Mount Etna, near Williamsburg and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1936 at the age of 16.

She began working as the secretary for the Williamsburg School Board at the age of 21 and retired from her role as business manager for the district in February 2010 at the age of 90. In addition to her duties with the school board, she handled payroll, ordered supplies, kept personnel records, answered the phone, collected wage taxes, and registered young men for the draft.

In 1997, Koontz received statewide recognition when she was awarded a plaque and certificate as Pennsylvania School Board Secretary of the Year.

Koontz still lives in Williamsburg and has many friends who consider her a homegrown treasure.
