Northern Bedford to Perform 'The Wiz'

Dorothy and all of her friends are easing on down the yellow brick road to the Northern Bedford High School on March 17 through the 19 at 7 p.m.

According to director Brett Keith, “The Wiz” is a contemporary retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. “

It is the exact same story,” said Keith. “However, it is told through music that is rock, gospel and pop styles.”

Keith said that the theme of the show – returning home to a family and people who care about you – it is relevant coming out of COVID shutdowns and pandemic situations.

“We are seeing that many of us have been through so much over the past two years,” said Keith. “A lot of us still made it through those difficult times with friends and connections. Those connections might have been made electronically or virtually, but it was with the communication that we were able to help and support one another.”

He added that now that there are more in-person gatherings and being with people, we see the importance of these connections.

The show stresses the bonds between human beings and friendships and the people who love and care for us through the difficult times.

“We see that with Dorothy as she travels from Kansas to Munchkinland through the land of Oz,” said Keith. “She picks up three friends and learns that we are thinking people. We are loving people. We are people who can be brave throughout the battles and people who are trying to capture them. We see the success at the end where you are able to face those with the people who you love. You can be successful or at least feel like you have been successful because there is a support system with you.”
