Race to the Primaries

Three men were running in the April Republican primaries for the congressional seat in the ninth district. They were State Sen. D. Elmer Hawbaker of Mercersburg, Franklin County, Kenneth W. Ferry of Martinsburg, and E.G. “Bud” Shuster of Everett. Earl P. Collins of Tyrone was running for the Democrats.

Brian Gates, a senior at Central, was given a grant-in-aid to attend West Virginia University in Morgantown. He was set to be a middle linebacker on defense for WVU’s football team.
