CHS Students Participate, Place In Annual Foreign Language Festival At IUP

Introduction to Articles and Statement of Claim

The Spring Cove Education Association (SCEA) would like to bring you updates of some of the many positive events that are taking place within our school district with which teachers are involved. In order to do so, we would like to sponsor this periodic article in The Morrisons Cove Herald in order to help you to be aware of these positive events.

This column is sponsored by the SCEA.

On Saturday, April 2, 2022, Central High School’s foreign language teachers, Kevin Buynack and Louise Wilson, took six students to the 31st annual Foreign Language Festival (FLF) at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). This event is sponsored by the Appalachian Professional Language Educators’ Society (or APPLES), a local group of foreign language teachers.

There has been a two-year hiatus for the FLF due to COVID concerns, but it was wonderful to get the language students excited about their academic endeavors again! Academic categories include listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There are also performance and art and culture categories like literary recitation, dance, drama, music/vocal, music/instrumental, art/reproduction, art/original, construction models, and tee-shirts in which the students can choose to compete. Students always enjoy showing off their foreign language and other talents outside the classroom, and it is amazing to see all the students cheering each other on for such a wonderful academic competition!

Such an event also meets the academic standard of Communities in foreign languages, as students share their talents in their target languages with those from outside the classroom itself.

All six CHS students who participated placed in various ways.  Some placed in multiple events.  This is AMAZING, considering that there were about 200 participants this year.  Here is a list of students who placed in various categories of the exciting competitions:
