Alpha Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met on May 10, 2022, at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church in Fishertown, for their regular business meeting.
President Becky Johnen introduced guest Megan Brown, teacher at the Chestnut Ridge School District and winner of a grant from Alpha Beta, that provided funds to expand a program for students to bake desserts sold to staff. The students gain experience in budgeting and banking as well as in community service, as the funds earned support the Bedford County Humane Society.
A second grant from Alpha Beta benefited Danielle Simpson and her students at the Everett Area Middle School. Simpson, a school counselor, used the funds toward the purchase of yoga mats for Mindfulness Sessions, where students learn skills in being present in the moment in order to reduce stress and anxiety. Students volunteer to attend the sessions held during activity periods.
The third grant enabled Meggie Schumaker to purchase equipment intended to incorporate more fitness into physical education classes at the Bedford Middle School. Dumbbells were selected as a means to encourage physical fitness habits for a lifetime.
Sandra Hoenstine presented each recipient a certificate.
President Johnen also recognized Alpha Beta First Vice President Tina Smith-Gilbert, winner of the Nancy Grove Visionary Award from Pennsylvania State of Delta Kappa Gamma. A preschool teacher at Claysburg-Kimmel Elementary School, Smith-Gilbert’s winning project provides a personalized library for each child.
In other chapter business, Linda Clapper reported that six more blankets had been donated to Bedford Children and Youth, bringing the chapter’s total to 84 blankets since beginning this project. Also, Finance Chair Royce Boyd presented the 2022-23 budget, which was approved.
The special speaker for the evening, Carol Deremer, shared her involvement with Beauty for Ashes, a ministry by women for women found in 20 countries around the world. Events are held locally at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church. Ms. Deremer showed slides from her recent trip to Costa Rica, where her group ministered to women who have experienced abuse.
The next meeting of Alpha Beta Chapter is scheduled for June 23, 2022, at the Spring House Estates in Everett.
