Putting cows on the front page since 1885.
Williamsburg's storybook run reached its final chapter Monday evening as the Blue Pirates fell 12-4 to Southern Fulton.
The Blue Pirates went with pitcher Lambert Palmer. Southern Fulton elected to go with their Sophomore Ethan Mellot. Mellot, who is mostly used as a utility player, has had himself a solid season. In six appearances Mellot has a record of two wins and no losses, along with an ERA of 1.09.
Lambert Palmer was the pitcher of choice for the Blue Pirates, who up to this point in the season hadn't pitched more than 3 full innings. 3 innings is all he would get in this one as well.
After a quiet top half of the inning for the Blue Pirates, it was time for Southern Fulton to go to work. And that is exactly what they did as they shelled Palmer.
After one inning the Southern Fulton Indians (19-5) had a commanding 4 run lead. If the Blue Pirates wanted to keep the game from getting out of hand, they would have to get something going in the second.
Unfortunately for Williamsburg, Mellot tossed another shutout inning. Southern Fulton couldn't get anything going in the bottom half of the second either. Both teams headed toward the dugouts ready to start the third, with the same score as the first, 4-0.
Williamsburg came to bat looking to make a dent in the lead that Southern Fulton got in the first, but were still unable to get anything going.
In the bottom of the third Southern Fulton broke the game wide open. The Indians plated 5 runs, and a game that was already out of hand for the Blue Pirates, continued to spiral out of control.
Williamsburg, to their credit, was able to put a dent into the lead as they scored twice in the top half of the 4th, making the score 9-2 in favor of Southern Fulton.
After the less than stellar 3rd inning from Lambert Palmer, the Blue Pirates called on a familiar face: Rowan Gorsuch, who had pitched every game in districts.
Gorsuch looked to stop the bleeding, as his team was looking to build off momentum that they had built in the top of the 4th.
Unfortunately for Gorsuch, he was unable to stop the bleeding as Southern Fulton continued to pile on. The Indians' hot bats continued to hit. The Indians plated 3 runs, all charged to Gorsuch. Southern Fulton took a 12-2 lead effectively ending any hope the Blue Pirates had.
A late rally in the fifth was too little too late for Williamsburg. They were able to put two across the plate but after giving up 12 runs already the chances of a comeback looked bleak.
The game was 12-4 heading into the final two innings of play. And that's how things stood. Dane Harvey shut the door for his final innings of work for Southern Fulton.
The Blue Pirates end a historical season for their program. Despite ending the season under .500 they were able to make it to a position that few seemed possible. And their fans should be happy; the team in districts showed flashes of what their program can be.
As for Southern Fulton, they will advance to the second round of the State Playoffs. They will play the (12-5) Clarion-Limestone Lions on Thursday, June 9, a game that should be action packed for those who attend.
