Sweet Corn Comes in Early

Local sweet corn crops were early this year due to the “weird” weather. The spring was cool and rainy, and June saw a heat wave. The last frost was also unusually early, giving farmers a chance to plant earlier.

A tour of local churches was planned for Roaring Spring as part of the town’s Anniversary Celebration. A number of churches were planning events to showcase their history and architecture.

A bluegrass festival was being held as a fundraiser for the Southern Cove Fire Company. The two day event was taking place on the Southern Cove Power Reunion Grounds.

Pennsylvania continued to have no confirmed cases of Chronic Wasting Disease. The disease was not found in any hunter-killed deer that were sampled, but it was found in deer in Maryland close to the Pennsylvania border.

Five members of the Garver Memorial YMCA earned medals at the 2012 Blair County Senior Golden Games. They were Jack Loys, John Szymckec, Jack Marks and Tom Kunkle.
