Following last week’s new state budget passage and the increase in funding to school districts, Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker announced Spring Cove School District would see a $247,204 increase in basic education funding, and a $84,342 increase in special education funding.
This increase is what Dr. Baker expected the district would receive. The district did not qualify for level up funding. She also said that there was a difficulty in getting enough bus drivers, paraprofessionals, and all support staff for the upcoming year.
During her superintendent’s report, Dr. Baker noted that as a part of the district’s PAsmart Grant, the Roaring Spring and Martinsburg Community Libraries each received $10,000 toward the purchase of STEM supplies, which they are now using as part of their summer programming.
Baker also announced that the district had been awarded a $7,500 Highmark Foundation Grant for Environmental Hazard Prevention, which will offset the cost of the chemical removal approved by the board on the maintenance project list last month.
Baker made a point to thank the community for its support of the Rotary/Dragon Pride Golf Tournament, which raised $13,341. The funds will be split between the Foundation and Rotary to support the schools and community. She also thanked the Central Quarterback Club for their donation of football equipment totaling nearly $1,000.
A motion to employ two assistant coaches were both unanimously approved by the board. Kelli Bray was approved as junior high girls assistant volleyball coach for the 2022 fall season at a salary of $1,750. Hannah Johnston was approved as junior high girls assistant basketball coach for the 2022 winter season at a salary of $2,421.
A motion to approve the athletic ticket prices for the 2022-23 school year reflecting no increase from the prior school year prices was approved by an 8-0 vote.
The resignation of Heidi Stern, math teacher at Spring Cove Middle School, was accepted by the board, as was the motion to employ Allison Duclo as a Library Science teacher at Spring Cove Middle School at a salary of $49,358.
The board also authorized Baker to advertise for employment vacancies within the district for 2022-23 school year. The motion to approve the list of teacher salaries for the 2022-23 school year was unanimously approved as was the motion to appoint Attorney Scott Etter to serve as hearing officer for student expulsions for the next school year with an hourly rate of $175.
The board transferred $250,000 from the General Fund to Capital Projects.
A motion to approve the donation of obsolete level-reading books from Martinsburg Elementary and Spring Cove Elementary to the Martinsburg Community Library and Roaring Spring Community Library was unanimously approved by the board.
The next combined committee of the whole and regular meeting will be Monday, Aug. 8, and a regular meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at the administration office board room.
