‘I Just Wet my Plants’ By Rick Vuyst

Rick Vuyst is a Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the University of Georgia. He also hosts a radio talk show, Flowerland Show. He also does gardening segments for television. Vuyst knows his stuff. You would expect him to give his words of horticultural instructions on every page of his book. That is not what you would find.

Vuyst uses his life experiences and colors them with gardening thoughts, not techniques. Vuyst is a baby boomer so I could relate to the book. I remember, as he does, the days when you raked your leaves to the curb in the fall and burned them. I don’t remember when I first heard the term “composting.” Vuyst’s father, a gardener, composted long before it was popular. Other recollections which were familiar included putting bread bags over your socks before putting your winter boots on. This kept your feet dry even if there was a slight leak. Vuyst interweaves the wisdom of life with his years of experience gardening. You will enjoy the humor. One thing he teaches, don’t plant your clothesline near a mulberry tree!

The book encourages the reader to experience gardening. Experiment with plants. If they die, try again. Gardening is a learning experience and something to enjoy, not fret over. The gardening puns are fun, too. I recommend reading this book. You will get some advice, like don’t over water your plants, but just sit back and enjoy the tales as related by Vuyst.
