House Destroyed by Fire

Herald of Aug. 14, 1947

The Theodore R. Snyder house on Cross Cove Highway, west of Martinsburg, was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Fifteen persons, ranging in age from a 10-month old baby to a 75-year-old aunt escaped the flames. John Seiler, a son-in-law who was staying at the house was burned about the face and arms when he went into the burning house to retrieve his wallet and a photo of the Snyder’s deceased son. Marjorie Stonerook,16, a neighbor who was staying at the house with her friend Alice Snyder, was the first to notice the flames and alerted the family.

Notice was sent to farmers growing tomatoes for the H. J. Heinz Company that the tomato receiving station in Martinsburg would open within the week. Corn harvesting for the Blue Mountain Cannery had already begun.

Grandpa Jones and His Grand Sons were appearing at Musselman’s Grove on Sunday. They were one of the most popular artists on King Radio.
