Scouting in the Cove: Bring Back The Pack so Eagles Can Take Flight

Morrisons Cove has a long history of scouting, which resulted in a relationship that was mutually beneficial. Through community support of scouting units, area youth have been able to participate and learn from the aims of scouting: character development, leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. At the same time, our community has also benefited by supporting Scouting units in the form of service projects, a component of Scouting’s rank advancement requirements.

Several Eagle Scout projects have benefited our area, some dating back to the 1970s and 1980s at the same time as the “new” Memorial Park building was being completed. These projects rehabilitated the outdoor pavilions and restrooms buildings as well as provided for landscaping and beautification. More recently, service projects have been part of the work being done for Eagle Scouts from both girl and boy troops in Martinsburg and Roaring Spring. The projects included installation of a sound system in a local church, establishment of a little free library at the Roaring Spring dam as well as the purchase of AED equipment for the Central High School Athletics Department and Camp Mantowagon.

Scouting in our community felt the impact of the COVID pandemic and unfortunately, after many years of activity, the Martinsburg Cub Pack stopped meeting in early 2020. However, efforts are underway to restart this important unit. The following adult leadership positions are needed: Committee Chair, Fundraising Chair, Advancement Chair, Cubmaster, and Den Leaders. All adults must complete Youth Protection training prior to becoming a registered leader (https://www.scouting.org/training/youth-protection)

Those interested, please stop by the Lion’s Pavilion at Memorial Park on the following Mondays: Aug. 29, Sept. 12, or Sept. 22 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. to meet with Doug Baker the Chief Logan District Executive or contact him at (717) 903-5441 or douglas.baker@scouting.org.

Scouting is an adventure of a lifetime, family fun, and preparing for your future! As founder Lord Baden Powell said, “Scouting is fun with a purpose.” The Cub Scouts program is for boys and girls grades K – 5 and Scouts BSA is for boys and girls ages 11-17.
