Tomatoes Passing Expectations

Herald of Sept. 4, 1947

The tomatoes being shipped from the H.J. Heinz receiving station at Martinsburg are passing expectations, despite the battle against blight. Because of the extra large crop, the station was in operation on Saturday morning. Saturday operations were not necessary before according to Miles Whetstone, local Heinz manager.

Record breaking production at the Blue Mountain Cannery continues, and wheat shipments from Curryville helped place Blair County in the number two position in wheat marketing reports at the State Department of Agriculture. Lancaster County held the lead.

The fruit crop in Morrisons Cove is rather disappointing this year, owing to heavy frosts in the spring that damaged buds in the orchard. The Charles Packard fruit farm at Ore HIll will not have more than 25 percent of a crop of apples. The Herbert Bridenbaugh farm is not expected to come above 50 or 75 percent of a normal apple crop this year.
