Central's Jeff Hoenstine (2) Eli Lingenfelter (22) and Dalton Metzger (10) celebrate after breaking up a desperation throw in the end zone to Bishop Guilfoyle's Will Tobin winning their season opener 21-20 Saturday at Altoona's Mansion Park.

The Central Dragons traveled to Mansion Park to face the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders in their season opener. A nail-biting game that came down to the final minute left the Dragons with a mere one-point lead to end the game 21-20.

After a fumble recovery for the Dragons in a scoreless first quarter, their momentum led to a 10-yard pass from Jeff Hoenstine to Eli Lingenfelter to score with 11:53 remaining until halftime. A failed punt left the Marauders with the ball on the three-yard line, and a quick run left the score tied with 6:07 left.

A Central drive ending with a 22-yard pass to Lingenfelter ended the first half with a seven-point lead for the Dragons.

Central's, Eli Lingenfelter (22) breaks up a desperation throw in the end zone to Bishop Guilfoyle's Will Tobin.

The Marauders scored twice in the third quarter, with the second P.A.T. blocked by Hunter Smith. Trailing by six in the final quarter, the Dragons pushed up field to lead to a three-yard run by Hoenstine to tie the game. A completed kick by Smith gave the Dragons the lead with 10:36 remaining in the game. Suspenseful final minutes left the Dragon defense to handle the Marauder offense for a pivotal turnover in the game. As the Dragon offense regained the ball, the clock ran out, leaving the Dragons victorious.

The Dragons had 158 passing yards and 177 rushing yards over 40 drives totaling 335 yards. Hoenstine completed 14 passes against the Marauder defense. The Dragons will now face the Richland Rams at home in the coming week.
