The National Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) organization annually sponsors two youth essay competitions, Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy. These competitions which are held on a local, district, state and national level, give students an opportunity to voice their opinions on a patriotic theme. Members of the D. Merl Tipton Post 43 and Auxiliary invited students from area schools to participate in these competitions. All entries that were received were from Northern Bedford County School District students.
