Southern Cove Power Reunion Plans Christmas Light Show

The regular Southern Cove Power Reunion (SCPR) meeting was held Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Fred Mellott.

Minutes were read by Melanie Clapper, club secretary, and accepted as read.

The treasurer’s report was given by Amy Mellott, which was accepted as provided.

It was reported that the SCPR fall show was “very successful,” possibly the biggest show yet. Many positive comments were given by the public. Club members were thanked for all the hard work they did for the show.

There were 388 hook ups for the fall show and minimal equipment problems. A thank you was offered to West Central Equipment and Wood Lake Equipment for the donation of equipment.

Vendors reported that they were pleased with the setup they had, but would like more lighting towards evening. This issue was discussed and the club will investigate rectifying this. Also, the club will investigate having a better sound system for next year’s shows. Water and electricity are being planned for the museum building and the vendor area.

President Mellott brought up the issue of safety measures for future shows. The group discussed forming a safety committee. This group will look at seatbelts, helmets, enforcement of rules and having an ambulance on site.

Raffle tickets for a tractor for next year with other prizes on the same ticket was discussed. The possibility of adding guns to the ticket was discussed. At this time, the tickets will not change. A gun raffle may take place in the winter or spring and is yet to be determined.

A tractor has been purchased for next year’s show and tickets will be available soon. The tractor for next year will be a 2100 Farmall H. A pedal tractor, cash prizes and a toy tractor are expected to also be on the same ticket.

Next year, the deadline for all vendors will be Labor Day and vendors must pre-pay for a spot.

Christmas show plans

A Santa suit for the Christmas light show has arrived.

The SCPR Christmas light show display forms can be obtained by contacting Barb Detwiler at (814) 494-2040.

The show dates are Dec. 9, 10 and 16 and 17. Wagon rides will be available, with scheduling through Facebook.

This year, there will be some friendly competition. Everyone that drives through the light show will be asked to vote on their three favorite displays. Prizes will be awarded to the three displays receiving the most votes. Winners will be announced on Dec. 18 on the SCPR Facebook page. All winners will be called to pick up their prizes.

Display commitments are due to Barb Detwiler by Nov. 20. Those participating are asked to provide a business card or logo. This will be used in the program handed out to every car that drives through.

The address for Detwiler is 255 Chestnut St., New Enterprise 16664.

Donations toward the event are welcome. The event is volunteer-operated and has become a fun event for the community.

Those planning a display are asked to please have working lights on the display along with a 100-foot power cord and tape to go on the cord. Participants do not have to be present to light the display. This will be done for you. Those with decorations or working lights who would like to donate may do so.

The group is also looking for homemade cookies for the event. There is freezer space available for those who would like to start baking now.

The next meeting of the SCPR will be Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend and participation is appreciated.
