“The Day You Begin” by Jacqueline Woodson: In a world where not everyone is quite like her, a little girl nervously begins a new day and finds that maybe she will find someone just a little like her. She will gain confidence and feel stronger than she did when she began. Then she will realize, though some may be a little like her, no one is quite exactly like her either, and that can be a good thing.

It’s great to find stories we can identify with. Some may even help us through tough times or help us feel a little better about ourselves. The beautifully illustrated, easy-to-read additions to our children’s section are fun, enjoyable, and inspirational.

“There Might Be Lobsters” by Carolyn Crimi: Sukie stays on the beach while her friend Eleanor plays in the water and frolics through the sand. Sukie is afraid of everything, but when her beloved stuffed monkey is swept out to see, she discovers she may possess more bravery than she thought possible. Sukie’s story is cute and motivational and super fun to read aloud.

“Ruby Finds a Worry” by Tom Percival: Ruby has a worry. Each day Ruby’s worry gets bigger. Since no one else seems to be able to see it, she tries to pretend she can’t see it either, in hopes it will go away. Unfortunately, ignoring it only makes the worry get bigger and bigger until it’s all she can think about. Eventually, Ruby finds someone else with a worry. When she talks to them about their worry, something amazing happens; their worry begins to shrink. Talking and sharing her feelings can help make the worry go away. This “Big Bright Feelings Book” is perfect for reassuring young readers in times of stress and a great starting point for talking about emotions.

Other books in the Big Bright Feelings series include “Perfectly Norman” and “Ravi’s Roar.” Some other books pictured above are “The Worrysaurus,” “My Heart Fills with Happiness,” and “Not Quite Narwhal.”
