Herald Feature from 1952 Shows 'Ritchey's Dairy Babies'

OPINION

To the Editor:

We have watched over recent years as smartphone cameras have become the most popular way of capturing and recording the people and events in our lives.

Photographs and videos are now stored in the internal memory of our phones. As a child in the 1950s, I grew up with snapshot cameras and rolls of film developed to capture our moments of making memories. Many of us from that era now have boxes of photographs we've accumulated over the years.

As I recently began sorting through my boxes of photographs to attempt some organization, I found myself consumed with reminiscing of days gone by. I came upon this full-page feature published in the Morrisons Cove Herald on July 31, 1952, in celebration of Ritchey's Dairy's 12th anniversary.

To my surprise and delight, the feature included my photo as a happy Ritchey's Dairy baby. As this Morrisons Cove Herald page is 70 years old, it doesn't take a math wizard to realize that the children participating in this tribute including me have years of memories under our wings.

While I no longer live in the Cove area, my mother is a resident at Homewood Retirement Community in Martinsburg. During our visits with her, we often visit Ritchey's Dairy for an ice cream treat. After 72 years in business, their ice cream is still the best. I wonder if I qualify for a discount now that I am a "seasoned" citizen and have proof that I was a Ritchey's Dairy baby in their early years!
