Gain for Democrats

As of this writing indications are that Tuesday’s election was a Democratic election, as fairly complete returns show a nationwide gain for the Democrats. Republican control of the house is in doubt and the majority in the senate has been greatly reduced. Pennsylvania however rolled up a good Republican majority and Gifford Pinchot, Republican candidate for governor, was elected by a plurality of more than a quarter million.

Twenty-five miners were believed to be dead after an explosion at the Riley coal company in Spangler, Cambria County. Fourteen badly hurt men were taken to the hospital. Fifty-five men are unaccounted for. The mine was filled with gas, making rescue efforts difficult.

Because of congested mail conditions during the last ten days of December, the state highway department can make no promises of forty-eight hour deliveries for auto licenses between December 25 and January 1. To make sure of no disappointment, tags should be ordered early.
