VP to Serve as Acting President for Time Being
After serving 17 years on the Spring Cove School District School, Board President James Butler resigned at the board's regular monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 14.
Butler first joined the board in 2002, and had a break of a couple years along the way. Butler said that with all of his children now graduated from the school district, he felt it was the right time to leave and was ready to focus on other things.
"It has been a pleasure to serve with the administration here. A great experience and I met great people. I am glad for every minute on the board," Butler said.
Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker thanked Butler for his service on behalf of the entire school district. Vice President Amy Acker Knisely will take over as acting president beginning Nov. 15.
Baker said the district would begin to advertise for applications for a new board member on Nov. 15. Applications will be due by Nov. 29. The new president and boardmember will be seated on the Dec. 5 meeting for reorganization of the board. The candidate chosen to fill the vacancy will have a seat that runs through the first Monday of December 2023.
Baker reported that the school submitted two Safe School Grants. The School Police Grant was awarded last year, and the district is seeking a second year. That grant will provide $20,000 toward the compensation of Police Chief Brozenich.
The Safe Schools Equipment Grant, however, is competitive. If awarded, the school could receive $50,000 for additional radios, cameras, metal detectors, a fob system, security lighting and software.
Plans are now underway for the Central High School musical, and Director Rachel Wagner has selected "Footloose" for this year's performances, which are scheduled for March 30, 31, and April 1.
Baker congratulated the Central football team on earning its third consecutive District 6 AAA crown, and quarterback Jeff Hoenstine for breaking the state record for the most touchdown passes.
Baker went on to say, "Thanks to the Dragon Pride Foundation for approving two venture grants recently. Their generosity will allow for the addition of a book vending machine at Spring Cove Elementary and a gaga pit at Martinsburg Elementary. Also many thanks to the individuals who have donated instruments through the instrument drive organized by Gabby Schwackhamer. To date, we have received a trumpet, snare drums, a flute, and a saxophone for use by students who need them."
Dr. Amy Miller will be assuming her position as Spring Cove Middle School Principal early, beginning Nov. 15.
In other business, A.J. Labriola was unanimously approved as junior high boys assistant basketball coach for the 2022 season with a salary of $2,511.
A donation of $800 from the district to the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company was approved.
The next meeting will be a reorganizational and regular meeting scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5, at the administrative building board room.
