Christmas Mail Causes Delays

A flood of Christmas mail swamped local post offices, causing delays in delivery. A system set up in the past year sent all mail to Altoona to be sorted and canceled. The Altoona postal center was not mechanized so work had to be carried out by hand, delaying deliveries. Additionally, the local post offices could not hire extra carriers because of a hiring freeze.
