Locals Attend Inauguration

Herald of Jan. 19, 1923

A number of Cove men attended the inauguration of Governor Gifford Pinchot at Harrisburg on Tuesday, January 16. In his inaugural address he promised the Volstead dry act (prohibition) would be enforced to the letter. The ceremonies were the simplest for a quarter of a century, with only $5,000 set aside for the proceedings.

Hobart Smith of Woodbury and Miss Harriet Burns of Almont, PA were married at the latter place on the previous Wednesday. The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Burns and was a former resident of South Martinsburg.

Over the weekend the Cove was in the grip of real winter weather. Drifted roads were reported from different sections of the region. A number of sledding parties were held, and sleighing was reported to be excellent.

Mrs. Mary Ashcom of Martinsburg gave a party at her home Monday evening, Jan 15, for a group of eight girls, former members of her Sunday School class at the Presbyterian Church.
