Old Bachelor Dies

January 26, 2023

Herald of Jan. 27, 1898

Just before going to press, we learned of the death of Isaac Smith, an old bachelor resident of Huston township. He was found at noon today, Thursday, lying upon the floor of his shanty in an unconscious state, with his head bruised. He died shortly after being found.

Mrs. Eleanor Skyles, one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, died at her home in West Martinsburg at the venerable age of 90 years and 8 months. Mother Skyles was a member of the Reformed church, a notable Christian woman, a loving mother and a good neighbor. Death found her neither surprised nor unprepared.

Next Monday night, 31st inst., Pro E. Glass will hold a meeting in the Odd Fellow building, in the room over S. S. Horton’s store, for the purpose of organizing a class in vocal music. All interested in this science are respectfully invited. Bring the singing book, “Songs of the Soul.” Meeting will be at 7 o’clock.

Chicken pox is raging in East Sharpsburg.
