In a highly anticipated game, the undefeated Central Scarlet Dragons faced the undefeated Penn Cambria Panthers for a night that packed the gym. After ending regulation time with a tied score of 49-49, two overtime periods elapsed before the Dragons took a three-point lead to end the game with a score of 62-59. Later in the week, the Dragons returned home to face the Somerset Eagles, where they found a dominating 65-27 victory.
After leading 24-15 at half, the Dragons felt confident in their ability to beat the Panthers. Quickly, however, in the second half, the Panthers made a push to keep the game tight, trailing by only five before the fourth quarter. With under 30 seconds left in the fourth, the Panthers still trailed by five, but quickly made a three-pointer, followed by a steal, then a quick fade-away shot at the buzzer to tie at regulation time.
At the end of the first overtime, the Dragons found themselves in a four-point deficit to the Panthers. Central's Eli Lingenfelter was fouled and missed his shot at the foul line, but a Dragon rebound gave Seth Bean a three-pointer, cutting the lead to one. A foul on the other end with one made shot gave the Panthers a two-point lead, before Lingenfelter raced down the court for the tying layup. The Panthers started out the second overtime with a three-point play but did not score the rest of the game. Two foul shots by Eli Muthler and one by Rylan Daugherty tied the game yet again. Thus, the game became a defensive war of attrition. With under a minute left, Muthler hit a contested three from the corner to take the lead for the Dragons once again. The Panthers got off a buzzer three-point shot, but fell short, winning the game for the Dragons. Lingenfelter led the game with 23 points, while Muthler had 20 along with the game winning shot and 12 rebounds as well. The Dragon JVs were not victorious, however, losing 63-45. High scorer was Robert Long-Yarrison with eight points.
After the stress-inducing night of Penn Cambria, the Dragons were back at home to absolutely dominate the Eagles. The Dragons gave up a mere four points in the first quarter and were leading 36-18 at half. The Dragons didn't let up in the second half, giving up only eight points throughout the third and fourth. Lingenfelter had 22 points along with four three-pointers. Muthler had 13, and Shalen Yingling had 12 with four three-pointers as well. The JV team did find victory at home with a 61-33 score. High scorer was Long-Yarrison with 15.
Now 14-0, the Dragons prepare for another three-game week against some of the toughest adversaries of the schedule: the Chestnut Ridge Lions, the Johnstown Trojans and the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders.
