Disease Found in Deer

Three cases of Chronic Wasting Disease were found in whitetail deer harvested during the 2012 firearms season. The deer were taken in South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, and Freedom Township and Frankstown Township in Blair County. These were considered the first cases of CWD in free-range deer in Pennsylvania.

The computer system for the Martinsburg Borough Police Department crashed. The cost to replace the server was estimated at $1,500, but it was expected to be compatible with new equipment and software used by the department.

Rear Admiral Joel D. Sipes died at his home in Houston, Tex. Sipes was a native of Martinsburg, but moved to Alexandria, Va as a child. He returned often to the Cove, spending summers with his grandparents. He entered the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and was commissioned upon graduation in 1959. He worked his way up through the ranks, focusing on marine safety.
