Feathers a Standout Player for Softball

Game One: Penn State Altoona 9, Martin Luther 1

Penn State Altoona got solid performances both at the plate and in the pitching circle to take care of Martin Luther (2-5). The Lions produced nine runs on 14 hits – including getting some key two-out hits – while limiting the Knights to just one run on two hits.

At the plate, five different Lion hitters recorded a multi-hit game.

Cameryn Feathers (Martinsburg, PA/Central) went 3-for-3 with a triple, one run scored, one run batted in, and a walk. Gianna Hoppel (Lewistown, PA/Mifflin County) also had a three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, two RBI, and a walk.

Madison Peters (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Madalyn Maynard (Towanda, PA/Towanda) went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI, and Alyssa Fisher (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) finished 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.

Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.

In the pitching circle, Peters had a strong collegiate debut by spinning a complete game win. In seven innings, the right-hander held Martin Luther to one run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven batters.

Penn State Altoona drew first blood in the top of the first. Hoppel reached on a two-out double, and the Lions cashed in when Feathers’ RBI triple scored the game’s first run.

Penn State Altoona doubled its lead in the top of the third with another two-out, run-scoring hit. Fisher doubled to put herself in scoring position, and with two outs one batter later, Hoppel drove her in with a base hit to make it 2-0.

Martin Luther got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, cutting its deficit in half on a solo home run from Lisa Hoffer.

But Penn State Altoona answered that with four runs in the top of the fifth to expand its lead to five. After back-to-back walks from Hoppel and Feathers put two runners aboard, Lauck scored Hoppel with an RBI single to make it 3-1. One batter later, with two outs, Maynard’s RBI single and Peters’ two-run double gave the Lions a 6-1 advantage.

Penn State Altoona tacked two more runs on to its total in the sixth, using Hoppel’s RBI double and Lauck’s sacrifice fly to center to set the score at 8-1. Fisher’s two-out RBI single to right in the seventh gave the Lions a 9-1 lead.

Game Two: Cazenovia 7, Penn State Altoona 1

Cazenovia got on top early, putting four runs on the board over the first three innings en route to a six-run victory over Penn State Altoona.

Feathers had two of the Lions’ six hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Hoppel was 1-for-3 with her team’s lone run scored, Lauck went 1-for-3 with the Lions’ only RBI, and Brooke Colledge (Everett, PA/Everett) and Madison Lucas (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) finished 1-for-3.

Fisher started in the circle and was saddled with the loss, pitching six innings and yielding five earned runs while recording four strikeouts. Maynard pitched one inning in relief, allowing one run and striking out one.

After a scoreless first inning, Cazenovia made it 2-0 in the top of the second. Susan Lord’s sacrifice fly plated the game’s first run, and Kaylie Kendrick scored on an error to give the Wildcats a two-run advantage. In the third, a two-run home run from Madison Cieslak increased Cazenovia’s lead to 4-0.

The Wildcats picked up a run in the tops of the fifth and sixth innings to boost their lead to 6-0. Sarah Penny scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, and Alexia Clemons contributed an RBI single in the sixth.

Penn State Altoona capitalized on three straight two-out singles to score their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. With two down, Hoppel and Feathers each reached on base hits, and Lauck followed with an RBI single to make it 6-1.

But Cazenovia got that run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple from Olivia Simone.

Penn State Altoona softball continues its week in the Fastpitch Dreams Classic with two more games tomorrow, Monday, March 6 at the Central Park Complex in North Myrtle Beach. At 9 a.m., the Lions will face Alvernia University before finishing their day against Ursinus College at 11 a.m.
